Hi OCCers!

This weeks Cork Open Coffee Club is on in the Rubicon Centre in Bishopstown, near CIT Campus. Please note that parking is limited at the moment due to building works so you may have to park in the CIT overflow car park.

Usual time: 10am – 12pm.

Roland Steinmetz from Shared Visions will be running Virtual Open Coffee (VOCC) again this week after the success of the last session.

If you can’t attend in person, be there virtually! You will have to accept a download and if you want to participate, plug in headset and camera before entering the meeting. This is PC only – no Mac or Linux at the moment unfortunately. Here is the link for the #vocc for Friday: http://www.nefsis.com/join.html?dn=OCC

Roland will talk briefly at the beginning of the session to introd! uce the concept (he has promised us he won’t do sales!) just neutral benefits about savings in time, expenses and high end remote communication.

Speakers:

We are always looking for speakers for our demo slots so if you (or anyone you know) has a new start up business idea and wants to get feedback from like-minded entrepreneurs, please do get in touch. We request that no sales-pitches are done in these sessions, but they are used as a way to brainstorm about your idea/technology and make suggestions. These usually last no more than 15/20 mins presentation and 10/15 mins Q&A.

Looking forward to seeing you all there on Friday. Don’t forget, we are now on twitter so you can follow @CorkOpenCoffee for updates

Many thanks,

Ciara Crossan

Cork OCC on Friday March 6th will be held in the Rubicon Centre, Bishopstown and we are delighted to welcome James Little, the External Liaison Officer at the Cork Constraint Computation Centre, part of Computer Science Dept at UCC to present to us on how new businesses & entrepreneurs in the area could benefit from working with their local university.

Companies depend on innovation, yet how do you find this if you are thinking of starting or expanding a company? UCC may have the answer.

The government has been funding many research projects with the
university over the past five years. Most of these have been
established with the objective of a commercial outcome, yet the
Intellectual Property (IP), software and ideas can only be taken so far
within a university environment. It is the role of the University’s
Technology Transfer Office to bring these inventions out into the
commercial market place. This presents a real challenge, linking
entrepreneurs with ready available fully developed IP, which could
provide the seed for a start-up company, the refocus of an existing
company or an additional product to an established one.

James will outline the current mechanism within UCC for accessing and negotiating IP while disclosing one or two examples.

When? Friday 6th March 10am – 12pm

Where? Rubicon Centre, Bishopstown, Cork

We’ve just had a fantastic 2008 in OCC and I think we can make it even better in 2009. A few quick thoughts as we race towards the end of the year.

OCC only works because of the attendees. Thanks to everyone who even attended one session this year.

Ciara and Gordon are doing a fantastic job re-invigorating OCC. I should have asked for their help earlier!

I’ll post at least three months of dates for 2009 shortly. The Rubicon ones will obviously be fixed location. The other ones will continue to rotate between locations like Luigi’s and NSC etc.

We’ll run one brainstorming OCC soon where everyone’s ideas for improving OCC can be discussed

Phoebe Bright has come up with the great idea of collecting a list of common challenges (e.g. SEO) and running group self-help sessions on them.

We’ll have more one-off special OCCs like the Tom Keane one during the year. Details TBA. Thanks again to John Fitzgerald for arranging the Tom one.

Thanks to everyone who sponsored coffee and hosted events during the year.

An extra special thanks to the Rubicon Centre for being our base. That’s Paul, Margaret, Maeve and Felix.

Don’t forget the Demo Slots. They can be used to propose product/business ideas too, you don’t have to have anything to show.

Have a great New Year.

Hello Cork OpenCoffee!

As was announced previously by Conor, myself and Gordon are now sharing the load of coordinating the OCC events. As someone who has benefitted greatly from OpenCoffee in the few months I have been attending, I was delighted to be asked to get more involved and help out a bit more.

The beauty of OpenCoffee is just that, its openness; however I will endeavour to follow the format that Conor has adopted and do a quick round-the-table (we’re talking 30 seconds here guys!) and then open it up to a demo and Q&A and then general networking and sharing of ideas.

The next OCC is on this Friday in the Rubicon Centre in CIT at our usual time of 10am-12. If anyone would like to take the demo slot, please leave a comment. If not, I will take the opportunity to showcase my site weddingdates.ie which launched a month ago and would be delighted to hear all your feedback.

Looking forward to seeing you all there. Also – if you know of any other businesses or individuals who might be interested in coming along, please invite them to come along – the more the merrier!

Many thanks,
